Okay, so the Wikis are generally character-centric in that they focus on appearance, personality, and ability without actually talking about the history... which is understandable. All of them have the same basic history in the series with differences being who was where when what happened, so it's really just easier for me to do it this way. Since the basics are the same, I literally copied a lot of this out of the history I wrote for Lance and rewrote things for Keith, so if some of the wording seems similar, that's why.

Paragraph summary
Eighteen years before series start, two Galra scouts were on the trail of the Blue Lion that was hidden on Earth. One of the scouts, a sleeper agent by the name of Krolia who was working with a rebel group, fired on the other scout, taking them out, but her own vessel was damaged in the process and she crashed on Earth where she was found and taken in by a guy with a Southern accent who lived in a remote area that resembled New Mexico or northern Arizona and worked as a firefighter. The two of them eventually fell in love and had a child (Keith), but things happened and she was forced to leave Earth in hopes of drawing Galra attention away from the planet. She left behind her blade for their son, in hopes it would protect him as he grew older, and Dad was left to raise Keith, up until an accident happened while responding to a blaze that cost him his life as well.

From there, Keith was bounced to a group home until he caught the attention of one Takashi Shirogane (henceforth referred to as Shiro) who vouched for him and got him into the Galaxy Garrison. He acted as both friend and mentor for a boy who'd lost both parents and had a tendency to get himself into fights, taking responsibility for Keith's actions on more than one occasion. Not wanting to let Shiro down, given that Shiro had never given up on him despite how difficult he was, Keith kept going and eventually became the top pilot at the Garrison. Unfortunately, after Shiro was lost during the Kerberos mission, Keith's temper and inability to back down caused him to get expelled from the Garrison under the banner of "disciplinary issues" (it was joked that he was booted due to punching Commander Iverson in the face).

Up until the discovery of the Blue Lion, Keith spent his time converting and living in the shed that sat on his late father's property while tracing the strange energy readings he was picking up around the area. This culminated in his creating a diversion with explosives and going after a pod that crashed in the desert that the Garrison had already converged on, where he discovered that the Kerberos mission hadn't been a failure -Shiro was on that pod, alive and well- and ran into some unlikely allies in the form of three Garrison cadets who'd snuck out after hours and got themselves wrapped up in something they weren't prepared to deal with. After a speeder chase in which Keith's piloting/driving skill outclassed their pursuers and they were able to escape, the rag-tag group crashed at Keith's and the following morning, things started to come together. Combining Keith's diagram of the strange energy readouts with Hunk's diagram of Fraunhoffer lines, they were able to come up with an exact location, then with Hunk's engineering skills, they were able to trace the energy to its source: the Blue Lion. From there, life as Keith knew it changed, which was probably for the best given that the life he had was kind of lousy.

The Blue Lion took them home to the Castle of Lions on planet Arus where they met Allura and Coran, were informed that they were to become the Paladins of Voltron, and had to go hunt down lions... all in under a 72 hour time frame. While Hunk and Pidge set out for planets, Allura and Coran sought the location of the Red Lion... who turned out to be in possession of the Galra, a race that had conquered most of the known universe under the banner of their Emperor, Zarkon. When the others returned, the group was deployed to retrieve the Red Lion (because Black, while in the castle, couldn't be activated without all four of the others present). It wasn't an easy task, and Keith got himself lost on the ship until he took a moment to breathe, calm down, and focus on feeling out the Lion's energy. Even then, it still refused to open up to him until he'd proven himself worthy of bonding with it, which he did by defending it from the oncoming Galra sentries, first in combat, then by opening the hatch and getting them all (and himself) sucked into space, and finally the lion chose to acknowledge Keith, rescuing him.

With all five Lions awakened, and a little bit of teamwork, they were able to form Voltron, Defender of the Universe, and take on the first of many Galra-created creatures called Robeasts that were sent out to stop them. Unfortunately, the celebration held afterward only gave the Galra commander Sendak a chance to sneak a drone into the ship and destroy the crystal that powered it, a blast that knocked out Coran and injured Lance in the process. At the same time, Sendak launched a diversion to draw the paladins away from the castle so that he could walk into the Castle unchallenged and launch it into space with all lions inside. While Shiro tended to Lance, and Coran took Hunk to locate a new crystal, Allura and Keith set out for the Arusian village which was supposedly under attack, but when Keith went in for a closer look, he discovered they'd been had and the two of them rushed back to the Castle. When they arrived, they found the barrier up and had no way of getting in until Pidge contacted them from inside and Allura guided her through to shut down the Castle's power supply which would lower the barrier. With that completed, Allura and Shiro joined the others in attacking Sendak and stopping his plans by sealing him in a containment unit.

With Sendak stopped and Lance recovered from his injuries, the team set out to the Balmera that Coran and Hunk had visited when seeking a crystal in order to liberate the Balmera from Galra rule, but were stopped by a distress call from a disabled ship. Hunk grudgingly did repairs while Lance decided to take one of the stranded aliens for a ride in the Blue Lion... which was promptly stolen while he was left chained to a tree. The others set out to retrieve it, with Keith relentlessly chasing the ship through an asteroid field while the ship's pilot sought to lose him, and on the other side of the field, the ship gave up when they found Keith had herded them right into the hands of his companions and their lions. After picking up Lance, they resumed the trip to the Balmera, only to find that although they got the crystal they needed to replace the ruined one, the planet was dying and there was another Robeast. While Voltron held the beast off, Allura performed a transferrence ceremony and rejuvenated the Balmera, which showed thanks by crystallizing the beast and ending the fight.

Thanks to Sendak's tampering, the Castle's AI of King Alfor, created to preserve his memories for Allura, was corrupted and set the castle into a tizzy. Because of this, the training program that Keith was using malfunctioned and instead of powering down like he asked, it set itself to 'Kill' and Keith had to run for his life while trying to fend off the training sentry. His attempt to escape the thing led him down a hall where Lance was trapped in an airlock that was about to open and suck him out into space while the training bot nearly managed to get Keith cornered. Hitting the switch with his sword, the airlock opened and the sentry was sucked out while he grabbed Lance's hand and pulled him back inside before closing the airlock. In the end, Allura was forced to delete King Alfor's memories and wormhole them to safety before it could send the castle hurling into an exploding star and the ship resumed normal operation.

From there, they set out to launch an attack on a Galra supply hub, but in the process, Allura was captured. They launched a rescue attempt and Allura was freed, but not before Shiro was injured by Zarkon's witch, Haggar, and Keith faced off against Zarkon. He was able to unlock Red's rail gun during the battle since he was having incredible difficulty fighting off Zarkon's bayard and his emotions were running high, but he was still beaten back and ultimately saved by the Black Lion, and the two of them retreated to the Castle.

While trying to make their escape after the realization that Zarkon was the original Black Paladin (hence the bayard), the ship's wormhole was compromised by Haggar's magic, sending the lions spinning off in different directions, with Shiro and Keith landing on a planet that was virtually a wasteland. With the lions disabled, Keith set out on foot to find Shiro, using his own environment to help propel him across the chasms in the landscape until he finally located his friend and was forced to pilot the Black Lion to defend its paladin to chase off the creatures that had Shiro cornered. Afterward, while the two of them sat to await rescue, Shiro told Keith that should anything happen to him, he wanted Keith to lead Voltron, and although Keith insisted Shiro would be alright, he didn't have the time to argue beyond that as they were found by Pidge who led them back to the Castle.

Once back on the Castle, Shiro was finally healed up and the group met Ulaz, the man that had sent Shiro to Earth, who told them of the Blade of Marmora, a rebel group made up of Galra who were against fighting Zarkon. Ulaz gave them some information and sent them to the base he was stationed at as a show of good faith, but the Galra managed to track them, sending another Robeast. Voltron fought it off as best they could, but it was Ulaz who defeated it, sacrificing himself to do so.

Following the events with Ulaz, Voltron rescued the Olkari and the Taujeerians, but despite their best efforts, Zarkon kept tracking them down. Keith was certain it was through him but had no proof, while Allura believed it to be because of her. In an effort to prove this hypothesis, Keith tried to slip out in a shuttle but was caught by Allura who insisted she would go along. They were determined that their not being there would keep the others safe, but that didn't happen and eventually they figured out that it was through Zarkon's link with the Black Lion after Red took off across space to pick up Keith and Allura - until then, it had been believed that the lions' bonds didn't reach across great distances, but they were proven wrong. During all of this, the ship's teludav (wormholer) was damaged, and when the smoke cleared, it was decided they needed to get some new lenses to do the repairs, so it was off to the Space Mall for new ones, and after repairs were made, the team set out for the Blade of Marmora's headquarters.

It was determined by Shiro that Keith would accompany him into the Blade's headquarters, as the Red Lion was the fastest and would be unaffected by the heat of the surrounding celestial bodies. This proved to be the best possible decision Shiro could've made: when they arrived, it was discovered that despite being told to come unarmed, Keith hadn't left his knife at home... but that knife was a Marmora blade and because Keith refused to walk away without knowing what his having it at all meant, he was forced to fight to earn those secrets. Wave after wave, trial after trial, beating after beating, he refused to quit, and even after managing to find another way around to avoid more combat, his body couldn't keep going after the adrenaline wore off and he collapsed, succumbing to hallucinations of first Shiro, then his father. The stress placed on his body from the constant fighting and hallucinations roused the Red Lion who proceeded to start tearing apart the base to get to its paladin, and finally Shiro was able to get to him so that they could go calm the lion. Before they had the chance, they were stopped by members of the Blade... and to avoid any more conflict, Keith offered up his blade, stating "It doesn't matter where I come from. I know who I am. We all need to work together to defeat Zarkon. If that means I give up this knife, fine", only to have the blade 'wake' and transform in his hand from a knife to a sword in front of everyone, something that was only possible if he had Galra blood. This discovery would become a point of contention between Keith and Allura, as her home planet had been destroyed by the Galra.

After winning over the Blade courtesy of Keith, the Blade and Team Voltron formulated a plan to stop Zarkon, but there were several tasks to be undertaken to get things ready. While everyone set out for their respective missions, Hunk and Keith were sent out to acquire some scaultrite from the belly of a weblum to be fashioned into teludav lenses, and although the others got a warm send-off from Allura, Keith was treated coldly and with utter disdain due to the revelation of his heritage. The flight out saw Keith having to put up with Hunk's constant questions and comments until he finally got annoyed enough to pull them back to task, turning on the video Coran had given them on how to obtain scaultrite. Unfortunately, the video hadn't withstood the test of time and was garbled, fuzzy, and skipped in places, so they missed a few things and were forced to figure them out the hard way.

After getting inside the creature, the two of them had to locate the stomach, but due to the weblum's internal defenses, they wound up getting separated, deciding instead to meet up in the stomach. On the way there, Keith discovered a ship that had been swallowed up and rescued its pilot, Axca. While she wasn't necessarily an ally, she was able to work with them so that Keith and Hunk could get the scaultrite, but made off with some of it after the work and collecting was done. Once they had their scaultrite, minus a bag, it was mission success and they were back in the Yellow Lion on their way back to the Castle so that they could begin the next phase... and Allura didn't even acknowledge that Keith had been present for the mission, only thanking Hunk for the retrieval.

With the bigger and better teludav finished, it was time to attack Zarkon. Because the Blade's spy, Thace, hadn't checked in with them, Keith chose to hop over to Zarkon's ship and handle things from there. As preparations were underway to get him there, Allura showed up to speak with him, finally realizing that it wasn't what he was but who he was that mattered, and finally accepting him, asking him to return safely. Once inside, he found Thace and the two of them worked to hack into the system which turned out to be futile, so instead, Thace chose to overload the systems and turn the room into a bomb. Keith managed to escape before the explosion, but ultimately they were successful in separating Zarkon from his troops. By the end of the fighting, Zarkon was gravely wounded, Shiro had vanished, and Haggar summoned Zarkon's son, Lotor, to take the throne.

Without Shiro, a new Black Paladin needed to be found, and from the group, Keith was chosen by the lion. To fill the gap left by playing musical paladins, Red selected Lance and Blue picked up Allura. This new team was no match for Lotor though. The paladins weren't used to their lions and Keith wasn't used to taking the lead, which nearly got them separated and killed on Thayserix. Finally, Lance was able to rein Keith's impulsive behavior in. Because of all this, they had extreme difficulty forming Voltron as they were unable to mesh together as a team. When they finally managed and began to get the hang of working together again, it was in time to go retrieve a trans-reality comet after picking up a distress signal from an Altean ship that was trapped between realities. The removal of the comet closed the rift, but Lotor was on hand to snatch it up and make a getaway. Soon after, Zarkon was revived, Lotor was branded both criminal and traitor to the Galra with a kill on sight order, and Shiro escaped a Galra cruiser to return to the team.

Shiro's return made Lance question his position, since he figured Shiro'd take Black, Keith would want Red, and he couldn't take Blue from Allura... so he offered to step down. Keith did his best to reassure him that everything would work out. For a while, Shiro remained behind on their missions as support while Keith led the team, but Keith was deferring to Shiro instead of doing it on his own. This culminated in Keith having Shiro try to re-bond with Black so that he could resume his position as leader, but it wouldn't work so Keith had to take over. However, doing dual work with Voltron and the Blade began to wear on Keith and he found himself bouncing from one to the other, coming back late, and finally skipping out entirely, which pushed Shiro to force himself to reconnect with Black. In the end things grew to be too much and Keith left to work with the Blade.

Soon, a plan was hatched to take down a third of the Galra Empire in one swoop, and all of the rebel forces were given their roles to play. Between the rebels, the Blade, and Voltron, key strategic points were secured and a battle raged at the Galra-run planet of Naxzela. Unfortunately, Naxzela was home to Altean technology that Haggar and the druids reawakened, intent on turning the entire planet into a bomb to severely cripple the rebels and destroy Voltron who was trapped beneath a shield that covered the planet. Lance managed to convince Allura to tap into her own latent abilities that had shown themselves on the Balmera and use that to try and break free, which actually worked. Meanwhile, Keith brought with him the rebels who had survived after taking the two Zaiforge canons, and the combined groups launched a full-scale assault, but the shields on Haggar's cruiser were too powerful though, and it looked as if she might win. To avoid the destruction of Voltron and the annihilation of the rebel forces, Keith turned his fighter around to sacrifice himself in hope of bringing down the shield, but instead, Lotor arrived just in the nick of time to shoot the shields and destroy the ship's armor, which caused Naxzela to go quiet. Haggar and the druids retreated, and Lotor handed himself over to Team Voltron and the rebels.

After the battle at Naxzela, Keith resumed his work with the Blade, and eventually Zarkon contacted Team Voltron and made an offer they couldn't refuse: give him Lotor, and he would hand over Pidge's dad. Despite Lotor's warnings, Zarkon double-crossed them during the exchange, and Lotor attacked Zarkon head-on, killing his father after a heated battle. Not long after, the Kral Zera, a Galran coronation ceremony, occurred and the Blade were present to detonate the pillars beneath the pyre and bring the whole place down, but because Keith caught sight of the Black Lion, he raced back in to turn off as many of the bombs as he could. Shiro's presence kept the place from being destroyed, but it didn't stop all of the bombs from going off, as Keith ran out of time and flying-tackled Lotor to the ground on his way out of there. As the battle raged around them, Lotor took the throne as Emperor, ushering in a new era of peace among the Galra, and Keith returned to the Blade once more.

Because the Galra turned on one another during the Kral Zera, the Empire splintered into different factions, and Commanders Trugg and Ladnok were facing off for possession of a superweapon created by Ranveig. However, this meant that there needed to be an extraction undertaken, as there was a spy in Ranveig's camp who had high-level security clearance and access to the weapon, which would need to be destroyed. As such, Kolivan handed the mission over to Keith, with the warning of not allowing his emotions to cloud his judgement.

Slipping in through the debris field created by the clashing Commanders' forces, Keith managed to not get himself killed in a crash landing after getting his wings clipped, and snuck inside where he was met with the spy's gun pointed in his face. They had a brief exchange on the nature of the superweapon and were about to enter an access code into a terminal when Commander Trugg's sentries broke through. The two of them fought hard, but Commander Trugg managed to capture Keith... and where the Blade of Marmora put the mission before the lives of comrades, the spy chose to go a different route, instead raising hands in surrender and bargaining with Trugg: release Keith and allow them safe leave, and in exchange, Trugg would receive the access codes to the superweapon. As the spy was the only one left who knew the codes, Trugg was left with no choice. The two of them boarded a Galra fighter and the codes were sent to Trugg, but while Keith was anything but happy that they just handed over a superweapon, the spy calmly informed him that no, they were handed over to it, which says they were most likely devoured by something vicious enough that it was locked behind a multitude of giant doors. Now that they were away from the battle and safe in open space, the spy handed over Keith's knife, which prompted him to ask how it was they'd been able to use it... something made possible because prior to giving it to Keith's father, the blade had belonged to her.

Yep, that spy was Krolia, Keith's mother.

Anyway, the two of them set out to complete Krolia's mission, which was to investigate the source of the quintessence Ranveig had used to create his super-weapon. They input the coordinates and got as far as finding the Quantum Abyss, a place where time and space are distorted and gravity hates everything. However, after an attack by unknown spider-critters, they got a little too close to a gravity well and the gravity kicked in, pulling the ship into the abyss and stretching it into nothingness. Before this happened, Keith and Krolia jettisoned the ship and just barely managed to escape death. They moved from debris to debris trying to stay out of the gravity wells and avoid being sucked in, but they'd lost the coordinates and the route through. This was also when they were hit by the beam of light emitted by the well that distorted time, allowing one to see glimpses of the past and future, and through these, Keith learned how his parents met as well as why Krolia had left him and his father behind... and Krolia learned of Keith's father's death. Also during this time, they discovered that the massive space whales that traveled through the abyss were unaffected by the wells and decided to try hitching a ride, which was successful.

The whales, it turned out, created their own ecosystem and atmosphere, which allowed them breathable air as well as food, shelter, and water. This was also where Keith found a small wolf pup that crashed into the whale like a meteor, and after fending off the creatures that may have made a snack of it, adopted the pup, raising it while he and Krolia got some much needed bonding time between the time distortion light bursts. Finally, the whales came out on the other side of the abyss and their impossibly slow journey was at an end, having encompassed 2 years due to time distortion, while for the world outside the abyss, it had been only hours at best, a day or so at worst. Leaving the whale, Krolia, Keith and the wolf sought out the source of the quintessence, finding what looked like a shelter of some sort... and once inside, discovered someone living there: an Altean.

Talking to the Altean (Romelle), they learned that there were actually many Alteans left after the fall of Altea, but they'd been living in two colonies created by Lotor and hidden within the Quantum Abyss in order to escape Galran detection. They also learned that the second colony harboured a horrible secret: it wasn't a colony at all, just a lab of some sort where Alteans were having their quintessence siphoned out of their bodies like human batteries. After discovering the location of the lab, Keith, Romelle, Krolia, and the wolf pup (who will be named Kosmo by his friends) set out in an Altean pod heading for the Castle of Lions in order to bring all of this to light. When they arrived at the Castle, they learned that Allura and Lotor were out doing test runs in a ship they built jointly. While they awaited their return, Romelle told them her story, and once Allura and Lotor returned from their test flight, confronted them with the truth of the colony and exposed Lotor's lies. Allura responded to this revelation by judo flipping Lotor to the ground, but before he could be restrained, Lotor's generals attacked the Castle of Lions in their Sincline ships, and Shiro snapped out, grabbed Lotor, stole an Altean pod from the hangar, and fled. The Paladins rushed to their Lions and gave chase with Keith at the helm in Black, but they were no match for the speedy Sincline ships, and in the end, they were pinned down as a wormhole appeared in the space in front of them. Shiro's pod was on a course to go through, followed closely by the Sinclines, but Voltron didn't have the speed needed to keep up so Keith had the team disperse in hopes that the force of it would propel the Black Lion through the wormhole after Shiro. It was a risky gamble because it separated Keith from the others, but he wasn't deterred in the slightest because he was hellbent on getting Shiro back. On the other side of the wormhole, he was faced with an entire fleet of Galra cruisers, all of which had their ion cannons aimed on him. The battle was short-lived, though Keith took enemy fire almost immediately and damaged one of Black's wings in the process, ending entirely when Shiro, under Haggar's mind control, lured Keith out and away from the fleet so that they could make their getaway.

After pursuing Shiro far enough from the fleet, the pod landed on an asteroid circling a large celesital body (is it a star? a planet? who knows. it's bright and has gravity) and Keith was quick to land and track him deep into the asteroid... to find that the entire inside of it has been carved out into a Galran facility that's basically a giant clone lab full of faux Shiros. Here, Shiro confronted Keith and the two faced off in a fierce battle. Throughout, Shiro taunted Keith, and Keith spent most of the battle trying to dodge and talk some sense into the other man, but when he was forced to face the fact that there was no talking Shiro down, Keith finally started to fight back. After taking a beating, Keith wound up pinned beneath Shiro, while the blade on Shiro's Galran arm seared a burnt streak into the right side of Keith's face, and almost lost to the older man, but ultimately Keith managed to pull himself together long enough under Shiro's taunts to get a lucky shot in, severing the Galran arm and thus winning the fight.

However, the asteroid had taken a really heavy beating through all of this, and began to crumble beneath them, parts of it having already fallen away due to Shiro's repeated attacks. Keith was left clinging to debris and Shiro for dear life when the entire structure jolted in a blast and they were dislodged, leaving them in a gravitational freefall heading straight for the star/planet/whatever that the lab had been orbiting.
