CHARACTER
Name: Uchiha Itachi
Age: 21
Gender: male
Series: Naruto
Background: The eldest son of Fugaku and Mikoto, as well as the older brother of Sasuke, Itachi was born into a very prominent family in one of the founding clans of Konohagakure and due to his ability to soak up knowledge and techniques like a sponge, he was deemed a prodigy by both clan and village. As was expected of most children born into a shinobi village (and all of those born into the Uchiha clan), Itachi was enrolled at Konoha's Ninja Academy where he graduated as one of the youngest on record at the age of seven and was placed on the traditional three-man cell under the watchful eyes of a Jounin, an upper-class shinobi. By eight, he had activated that which made his clan one of the most feared: his Sharingan bloodlimit.
His time as a Genin lasted roughly three years before he was promoted to the rank of Chuunin at age ten. Around that time, his life began to take a drastic turn -and not necessarily for the better.
Always intent on keeping the dwindling clan in the "good graces" of the village (or so it appeared), Fugaku pushed Itachi even further, sending him on mission after mission until finally the boy was noticed by Konoha's Special Forces, the ANBU. After a little more pushing to make him stand out, Itachi was pulled from his duties as a regular shinobi, tattooed, and moved to the head of an ANBU squad at the age of thirteen. Following his entrance to ANBU, the missions increased in number, and it was slowly wearing at him (although it's on record that he's only completed one S-rank mission and 0 A rank, while the rest were lower-classed ones, possibly due to his age and the "mission" he was given by those of the highest rank in the village).
During this time, it had come to the attention of Konoha's top brass that the members of the Uchiha clan were planning a revolt in order to regain the pride and status they lost when they were confined to a corner of the village after the Kyuubi's attack that caused the death of the Yondaime Hokage. It was a known fact to the village leaders that the Sharingan was capable of controlling the demon, so when it attacked, they immediately assumed an Uchiha was behind it -despite the fact that it was, in actuality, a completely unrelated event.
In order to keep a watchful eye on the Uchiha, they needed an insider, someone who had sworn allegiance to them, would act as the link between Konoha and the Uchiha, and would report to them on their findings. For that, they chose Itachi. While his father had him placed in ANBU to act as a spy for them and relay things about the village to the clan, the village leaders had another agenda and used Itachi as THEIR double agent.
He'd been old enough when the Kyuubi's attack came to know what war was, to have friends and relatives die, and he hated it. For the freedom that came with peace, he accepted his role and carried out his mission to a near perfection.
When the clan was called together for a meeting, Itachi was ordered to attend despite the fact that he had other plans. The following day, as he sat outside with his little brother, three others arrived demanding to speak to him. First, he was questioned about why he hadn't been present at the meeting, then they raised questions about a suicidal drowning that had occurred the same night: Uchiha Shisui, a man whom they believed Itachi had thought of as a brother and friend. The suicide note was handed over to the boy to see, and while the handwriting was in fact Shisui's, they brought up the possibility that for someone with the Sharingan, copying that handwriting to perfection was easy. Their request was that he take the note to ANBU and have them investigate in hopes that other clues would surface... because if it was left to Konoha's Military Police (which was made up entirely of Uchiha clan members), they would go about it their own way and FORCE those clues out.
It was a thinly veiled accusation. They suspected Itachi because his words and actions had grown increasingly peculiar following his induction to ANBU. Shisui had opted to keep watch on the boy, and now he was dead. To them, it was no coincidence that neither Itachi nor Shisui had attended the meeting the previous night... and their parting words to him, "If you try to hide anything, we'll know right away", pushed the last remaining bit of patience Itachi had with them over the proverbial cliff despite the fact that -unbeknownst to them- their accusations were true.
His sudden attack took them by surprise, and before they could retaliate or even knew what was going on, the three of them were on the ground.
They had underestimated him, believing that he would hear them out and it would scare him into confessing for something he may or may not have done; instead, they got a demonstration of power's corruption, which was interrupted by Fugaku who, like the others, insisted that the boy had been acting strange. To that, he received the response of "There's nothing strange... I'm carrying out my duty. That's all." His answer wasn't quite believable for them, and when questioned further, he snapped.
Sasuke's tiny voice was what put an end to the argument, and Itachi apologized for what he said. Things appeared as if they were going back to normal, that maybe Itachi was just going through a rebellious phase, but in reality, it was a failed attempt to make the clan realize that they were in the wrong. His time as liaison between the village and clan was nearing its end.
The mission he'd been given had been simple: dispose of the Uchiha uprising by disposing of the Uchiha. He would wipe them out and leave the village so that their memory would gradually be erased from history. To that end, he met with Uchiha Madara asking for his help in taking out the clan... but in exchange, Konoha was not to be harmed. The agreement was made, the decision reached, and the mission carried out... with one small error.
While Sasuke was out and the clan settled in for the night, Itachi and Madara set about creating the event that would become known to the citizens of Konoha as the Uchiha Massacre. Men, women, and children, regardless of age, were mowed down in cold blood over the course of a single night and finally ended in his own home with the murder of his parents, Fugaku and Mikoto. Every last Uchiha in Konoha, down to himself and Sasuke, was dead.
After Sasuke returned home, Itachi essentially mind-raped him by using his newly acquired Mangekyou Sharingan's Tsukiyomi on the boy, but refrained from killing him, telling him that he was weak and not worth killing. In truth, the reason Itachi left him alive was not because Sasuke was weak, but because ITACHI was. He couldn't bring himself to kill him, and instead did what he could to ensure that Sasuke would survive, even to the point of begging the Hokage to watch over him. Sasuke wasn't tainted by the knowledge of what the Uchiha clan truly was, holding pride in his name and his bloodlimit, and he wanted that innocence to remain, even if it meant letting Sasuke believe that he was the "bad guy". Instead, Sasuke was told to hate and despise him; run away and cling to life, live in an unsightly way, and when he had the same eyes, come before him... and with that, Itachi was gone.
Years later, he resurfaced as an S-Class criminal and part of Akatsuki, and returned to Konoha in search of the Kyuubi's Jinchurikki alongside his partner, Hoshigaki Kisame. There they encountered and fought Asuma and Kurenai, and may have beaten them both had it not been for the appearance of Kakashi. He and Itachi faced off only to have Kakashi fall to Tsukiyomi and be rescued by Maito Gai who had shown up after hearing that Itachi was back in the village. Because they weren't there to cause a scene, though, Itachi and Kisame departed and resumed their search for Naruto.
When they located him at an inn and attempted to remove him from the village, Sasuke showed up on the scene after hearing about Itachi when he'd gone to visit Kakashi, and attacked him outright. It was hardly a fight. Itachi wasn't scratched while Sasuke had a broken wrist, several internal injuries from being kicked around like a rag doll, and mental trauma after once again getting mind-raped. Even Jiraiya, one of the legendary Sannin, was unable to stop him, though he did manage to force Itachi to utilize another technique in his arsenal: the black seven-day flames of Amaterasu.
Itachi's goal in that endeavor wasn't so much the capture of Naruto as it was an assessment of him. Several times, he could have taken the boy captive but chose not to. His heart just wasn't in it.
Two and a half years later, Akatsuki made their move, this time aiming for Sunagakure and the Ichibi that was sealed inside Gaara. While Deidara and Sasori went to Suna, Itachi and Kisame were dispatched to slow down the Konoha shinobi that had been sent out to aid the other village. What they encountered was only a replacement that Itachi continually poured 30% of his chakra into, but it was able to stall them long enough. When their replacements were beaten, Itachi and Kisame went back about their own business, once again fading from the scene.
The next time he would surface would bring about events that would become his final battle: the encounter with Sasuke.
The first time they met up after the "fight" that took place in the inn back in Konoha, Sasuke was allowed to win, revealing that the Itachi he fought was nothing more than a bunshin. The second time, though... the fight lasted for hours on end, with the majority of it being strictly genjutsu after genjutsu, each one testing and pushing the other. It was then that Itachi's "true" motive behind Sasuke's survival appeared -to gain an eternal Mangekyou and free himself of the encroaching blindness that prolonged use of the Sharingan brought about. The method by which this was gained was brutal -rip Sasuke's eyes out of his head and have them implanted into his own- and there was no way Sasuke was going to stand for it.
Back and forth it went until Itachi's movements began to lag; attacks he should have been able to avoid connected and he began coughing up blood. He used Tsukiyomi initially during the genjutsu battle, and was forced into using Amaterasu several times during the fight, which put a heavy drain on his chakra, and culminated in using up his last bit of strength to reveal the final technique in his arsenal, Susanoo, which created an impenetrable shield around him that not even the part of Orochimaru that remained inside Sasuke could break through.
His goal was so close. Sasuke's chakra was exhausted and he had him backed into a corner. All he had to do was walk up and take what he wanted.
However, when he was within arms reach, the man who had been anathema to Sasuke did something completely unexpected: instead of attempting to remove his brother's eyes, he gave him one final poke to the forehead, just like old times. What had once been "Forgive me, Sasuke. Another time" became "I'm sorry, Sasuke. There won't be a next time" as a faint smile touched his lips, and the fingers that rested on Sasuke's forehead slipped down, leaving bloody streaks in their wake. His body fell forward, head striking the concrete slab his little brother had backed himself against, and he crumpled to the ground.
With that bloody tap to Sasuke's forehead, his true goal was realized: imparting to Sasuke his mastered Mangekyou Sharingan and providing him the means with which to ensure his own survival.
Itachi's nightmare was finally over as the disease that had ravaged his body took over and the sweet embrace of death carried him from the battlefield...
...and dropped him into a room he didn't recognize in a place that definitely wasn't anywhere he'd been before.
Personality: ((Ugh, I'm going to bounce around a lot here, so bear with me,please!))
Itachi was considered a prodigy by his clan and doted upon as such with a lot of responsibilities dumped on him, so he doesn't seem to have much of a child's mind about things and is not easily held in check. In his words, power and arrogance go hand in hand; that having power means you become isolated and arrogant.
He rarely speaks, but when he does, his words are carefully thought out and when speaking to others, he typically uses honorifics, though whether it's out of actual respect or not is something that varies depending on the person in question. With the other members of Akatsuki, he's typically withdrawn and quiet, speaking only when there's something that needs to be said or if it's asked of him. He seems to think about things long and hard if his outburst with his father and relatives is any indication.
At first encounter, Itachi is absolutely, positively, without a doubt an asshole and can be appear to be abnormally cruel and heartless, as seen by how he treats Sasuke after the massacre. He's incredibly detached when it comes to things like emotions, hiding his true feelings beneath a bored expression and a rather uninterested tone of voice.
Beneath the cold exterior that's been built up over time however, he's anything but. The facade that he's worn for so long though makes it difficult to for him to be seen as more than a complete and utter douchebag, and he seems to be satisfied with letting that be what the world believes. He really does care about his brother (though he has a rather violent way of showing it), but he keeps his true intentions shrouded in mystery and genjutsus. He doesn't believe in things like rules, limitations, prejudices, or restrictions, and he harbors a deep hatred for war and violence... yet he'll willingly beat Sasuke to a bloody pulp if it means Sasuke will keep pushing to improve himself.
Fighting is something he won't opt for unless there's no other choice or he's in a hurry, but when he does fight, he tries to hit hard and fast to put an end to the encounter as quickly as possible and he won't attack unless provoked. Even then, if there's a chance that talking things out would work, he'll try to take that route, and should it fail, he'd sooner turn and walk away than resort to violence.
Itachi also comes across as rather lazy in his attitude and doesn't seem to take an interest in anything that doesn't directly involve himself or Sasuke, the only other person in his life that matters to him. Just because he sees Sasuke as important doesn't mean he's 'brotherly' toward him, though. He pushed Sasuke the way he did for a reason, and telling him anything other than what he made him believe would be a waste of breath and could halt Sasuke's progression. He goes out of his way to make himself the barrier that Sasuke must overcome.
Samples will be added when found.
